Roan Mountain is located in the Appalachian Mountains on the border between Tennessee and North Carolina. The elongated ridge consists of several peaks between about 1700m and 1900m in elevation. Most of them are not forested and have impressive populations of R. catawbiense and R. calendulaceum. The views toward Tennessee and North Carolina are legendary. We hiked part of the Appalachian Trail from Carvers Gap to Round Bald, Engine Gap, and Jane Bald to Grassy Ridge Bald and back (8,5km/5.3M, 340m/1115ft elevation gain and loss).
