06.05.2019 Hawksbill Mountain, Linville Gorge (NC, Burke Co.)

One of the most beautiful sites to see R. carolinianum doubtless is Hawksbill Mountain, the sloped summit plateau of which is looming majestically above Linville Gorge. It is a truly magic place. Wonderful views are guaranteed not only to neighbouring Table Rock Mountain and across the gorge but also into the Blue Ridge Mountains. The here at this exposed spot extremely compact plants mostly have good pink flowers as it is the norm in the northern part of the distribution area of the species. Sometimes R. catawbiense intermixes (3km/1.9M, 200m/660ft elevation gain and loss).
