Little River Canyon has cut deeply into the large plateau of Lookout Mountain. A narrow and sometimes very steep road leads along the western rim of the canyon from overlook to overlook. Sometimes in the steep bluffs there are R. catawbiense f. insularis and R. canescens. However, both species were not in bloom, the first not yet and the second not any more. Instead Fringe Trees (Chionanthus virginicus) and countless climbing Cross Vines (Bignonia capreolata) put up a great show. Along the wild river there was R. arborescens as well, but we did not care to hike down into the gorge.
