The Cumberland Plateau extends into the northeast corner of Alabama. It consists of a thick limestone base, the slopes of which rise steeply from the plain. Above this is a thinner sandstone layer, partly covered with clay. Thousands of R. canescens grow in the forests of the mostly shallow sandstone and clay areas. First we were on Jacobs Mountain, then on Putman Mountain. All rhododendrons shown here are R. canescens, so I will omit captions for them.
