Having already been to the Pea River once on 20.4.2019 (see there) to look at yellow-flowering R. colemanii, I came back today with Ron Miller in the fall, but this time a few km further south near Ariton where CR 77 crosses the river. Because I suspected, based on the plants I had grown from seeds collected in 2019, that these might not be R. colemanii but hybrids between R. colemanii and R. austrinum, I was eager to see if the plants here showed the same characteristics as my seedlings at home from the site farther north. And it was exactly the same: The winter buds of the azaleas were fuzzy and not slick as usual with R. colemanii. Now I was anxious to get here again in the spring at flowering time. See the entry on 14.4.2022 about it.
