Grayson Highlands State Park is located in western Virginia near the North Carolina border. In exposed places the area is covered with scrub forest. Here R. catawbiense is found above all. But we also saw R. calendulaceum and R. pilosum in bloom. First we stopped briefly at the so-called Country Store. Behind this small store is a beautiful golden flowering R. calendulaceum. Then we went on to Massie Gap. From there we hiked to Wilburn Ridge, a landscape with lots of brush, rocks and a group of wild horses.
