Toxaway Mountain is located in western North Carolina, not far from the South Carolina border. We drove up the small road that leads to the 1456m summit, en route to explore the abundant occurrence of R. minus there at peak flowering time. The flowers of this population have only very short tubes, as is typical of R. minus in the Appalachians. There are also R. calendulaceum, R. arborescens, R. viscosum var. montanum, R. maximum, R. vaseyi, and R. pilosum. Except for the latter species, we have seen all of them.
