The Perdido River forms the border between Florida and Alabama. Styx and Blackwater Rivers are tributaries that have water that is just as acidic and blackish-brown, but otherwise crystal clear, as their main stream. Today we took a boat trip in the area where the three rivers meet. R. austrinum does not exist here, the rivers are probably just too acidic. R. serrulatum, however, thrives everywhere. Normally the flowering of this species starts in early summer and continues until autumn. But here is one of the few places where a plant regularly shows its flowers already in late April / early May. We were lucky, the first flowers were already open.
